KOMPSAT II Signs Contract to Export Images Worth $22 Million

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) disclosed on Monday that it signed three sales contracts to supply satellite images from Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) II to European Space Agency (ESA) last year, which will involve satellite images worth $22 million over the next three years.

To this end, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) that operates KOMPSAT II will use the earth station of Svalbard, Norway, in the North Pole to receive image data from KOMPSAT 10 times a day and distribute it to the ESA.

KOMPSAT II, which was launched in July 2007, is currently at an altitude of 685 km and is in orbit around the earth approximately 14 times per day, taking shots of 1m resolution black-and-white images and 4m resolution color images.

Korea Aerospace Industries and France’s Spot Image are acting as sales agencies for KARI to sell the satellite images of KOMPSAT II in the satellite image market at home and abroad.

MEST also announced that it plans to actively conduct trial projects, public relations and training for experts related in the field so that satellite images can be used in a wider range of areas such as three-dimensional geographic information systems as well as disaster and environmental pollution prevention.
