VATICAN CULTURE GALILEO GALILEI

Press conference on the Galileo Case

Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture, addresses the media during a press conference on the UN-designated International Year of Astronomy at the Vatican on 29 January 2009. Ravasi said the Holy See was organising a series of conferences commemorating the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's use of the telescope. The Inquisition of the Catholic Church tried Galilei in 1633 and forced him to recant his then radical assertion that the earth revolved around the sun. Ravasi said that the Church was ready to ''further reconsider the Galileo case', 17 years after Pope John Paul II admitted it had erred in condemning him. 'The time is now ripe for a fresh reconsideration of the figure of Galileo and the whole Galileo case', he said. 'Galileo deserves all our appreciation and gratitude', Ravasi said, remarking that the Vatican has shelved plans to put up a statue to him. EPA/MAURIZIO BRAMBATTI
