Golfers teed off in temperatures of minus 14 at the Saint Paul Winter Carinval in Minnesota. Special coloured balls and markers were used to help competitors find their way round the full, 18 hole course, set on the thick ice of the state's White Bear Lake. Organisers said a good day out was had by all and promised the course would make a return next year. Proceeds from the event were given to a local charity.

Organizers of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival - who call their event the Coolest Celebration on Earth set up the course to hold the second annual 'Bear'ly Open. The greens fees, or perhaps ice fees, were 30 dollars (23.13 euros) for adults and 15 (11.56) for students with all proceeds going to the White Bear Emergency Food Shelf. With the wind chill, temperatures were well below zero but that did not keep duffers from taking part in the tournament.
