Seoul City and the National Geographic Channel (NGC) are to carry out a joint campaign against climate change.
Mayor Oh Se-hoon exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Ward Platt, NGC's Asia Group managing director, in a signing ceremony at City Hall, Jan. 12.
The partnership is expected to help promote the third biennial C40 Large Cities Climate Summit hosted in Seoul, from May 18 to 21, using the channel's vast media resources, a city spokesman said. More than 500 city-related people from some 80 cities, including 53 members and associate members, will be invited to take part in the summit, he said.
Participants will share their policies and experiences under the theme, ``Cities´ Achievements and Challenges in the Fight against Climate Change,'' he said.
C40, or the C40 Climate Leadership Group, is a group of the world's 40 large cities committed to addressing climate change. The members include Seoul, Beijing, Moscow, New Delhi, first host London and New York, the host of the second summit in 2007.
The NGC logo will appear on C40 Summit promotional items. The documentary channel will also insert the sponsorship logo of Seoul in its 2008 Emmy Award-winning film ``Six Degrees Could Change the World.'' Using cutting-edge computer graphics, the film tells the shocking story of what will happen if the Earth's temperature rises by six degrees.
Seoul and NGC will also team up to plan and launch various programs on environmental protection, including inviting renowned experts to a series of lectures in the field of the environment and climate change.
``Seoul City's joint effort with NGC is expected to boost the image of Seoul as a leading city concerning environmental protection,'' a city official said.
