Images from a scientific voyage Into the Tasman Fracture
A handout photo released by CSIRO, Advanced Imaging and Visualization Laboratory WHOI, 18 January 2009, of a half-metre-wide mouth of a 2-metre high "waffle-cone" sponge, found at a depth of 2197 metres, as photographed during a scientific voyage Into the Tasman Fracture, a four kilometre-deep crack in the earth's crust off the coast of Tasmania.
