Schizophrenia, or brain disorder characterized by abnormality in the perception or expression of reality, was the most treated ``costly'' disease among 20- and 30-somethings last year, the National Health Insurance Corporation said Monday.
According to its report on subscribers who have been treated for more than 3 million won ($2,100) per disease annually, the brain disorder was treated among 3,778 in their 20s and 6,497 people in their 30s, ranking highest places in the age brackets. The disease costs more than 5.6 million won annually.
A total of 9.3 trillion won was spent to cover 1.6 million costly disease patients, accounting for 39 percent of total corporate expenditure.
Among them, 559 received treatment costing more than 100 million won yearly, reaching 85 billion won. The corporation covered 70 billion won of it.
Cancer took the majority of the costly disease category while disorders in aspiratory organs or bones followed. Males were mainly treated for cerebral infarctions, while females were for senile cataracts.
``In an aging society, the increase of patients in all kinds of diseases is natural. However, some costly diseases could be prevented with changes in lifestyle. We need nationwide awareness,'' Park Mun-kyu of the agency said.
