Fantasy. Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. "Nutcracker - The Untold Story," the movie is based on the fairy tale that inspired the ballet. Tim Rice (Lion King) contributes lyrics to eight new songs using Tchaikovsky`s scores, from "The Nutcracker" itself and from his concertos and symphonies. Lane gifts the Nutcracker doll to Fanning in 1920s Vienna and John Turturro (Transformers, The Big Lebowski) plays the evil Mouse King.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (U.S.)

Opening Dec. 14

Action-Fantasy. Directed by Eric Brevig. This 2008 movie update of Jules Verne`s classic sci-fi/fantasy novel uses the 1864 tale as a template, with its hero, scientist Trevor Anderson, referring to his missing brother`s notes on the novel. His nephew Sean in tow, Anderson travels to Iceland to investigate his sibling`s theories, enlisting a fellow scientist`s daughter, Hannah, as a guide. Soon the trio`s Icelandic mountain trek descends into a cave and, then deeper still to, naturally, the center of the earth, where dinosaurs and other strange prehistoric creatures still dwell. After many dangerous encounters with the native flora and fauna, Trevor, Sean, and Hannah must find a way back to the surface or face being stranded miles below the earth`s crust.

Ponyo on the Cliff (Japan)

Animation. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is Miyazaki`s own unique take on Hans Christian Anderson`s tale, "The Little Mermaid." It tells the story of a young girl fish who defies her father`s wishes and beliefs about the human world to live with the boy she loves. After covertly traveling to the surface by jellyfish, Ponyo becomes stranded near a house on a seaside cliff, where she is found and rescued by a human boy named Sosuke. Sosuke names her Ponyo, and takes her to his school in a bucket, and shows her to the little old ladies who live in the nursing home where his older sister, Lisa, works.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (U.S.)

Opening Dec. 24

Sci-fi. Directed by Scott Derrickson. Keanu Reeves tops this adaptation of the seminal 1951 sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still with this 20th Century Fox production. Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) helms the story of an alien traveler, Klaatu (Reeves), who heads to Earth along with his bodyguard robot, Gort, to deliver a warning of planetary destruction if the people of the world fail to bring peace to their civilizations.

Speed Scandal (Korea)

Opened Dec. 4

Comedy. Directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol. Hyeon-su, a 36-year-old ex-boyband member has kept his celebrity status relevant by hosting a top radio show. Life is good for this middle-aged DJ, until one day Jeong-nam, a 22-year-old woman who had been obsessively sending him fan mail, shows up at his radio station insisting she is Hyeon-su`s illegitimate daughter. Adding a spin to this disaster is the presence of her 6-year-old daughter, making him a grandfather.
