December is a month laden with various year-end parties that often end in binge drinking leading to various health issues.
Irresponsible drinking of alcohol leads to serious health problems. Dr. Lee Jung-kwon of Samsung Medical Center warns that drinking too much alcohol not only harms the liver, but also the brain and other organs. He said 30 percent of Koreans lack the enzyme that helps break down alcohol resulting in a low tolerance for alcoholic beverages.
Here are some tips from Lee to help enjoy healthier celebrations.
1. Drink in moderation: The slower you drink the less likely you are to lose control. The amount of alcohol the liver can handle is limited and so the slower you drink, the more the alcohol is broken and this stops people from getting drunk.
2. Avoid alcohol diluted with carbonated fluids: Sodas, colas, are absorbed faster by the digestive system.
3. Do not drink ``mixed alcohols'': Cocktail are less of a good idea, but so-called bombshots mixing beer and soju, or beer and western liquors are disastrous.
4. Do not smoke while drinking: When drinking, your liver is in need of more oxygen. However, smoking puts carbon monoxide into the body that hinders circulation and the absorption of oxygen.
5. Be alert to some ``darker'' drinks: Vodka or white wine, and some transparent liquors, leave less of a hangover while bourbon, Scotch and red wine are rich in congeners and invite a traumatic morning after.
6. Take vitamin B regularly: regular intake of vitamin B helps the liver break down alcohol faster and helps cope with dehydration.
7. Drink fruit juice or honey water the morning after: Do not drink alcohol to get over a hangover. Coffee is not good as it is a stimulant and causes the body to get rid of vital fluids. Water is still the safest bet.
