Samsung, LG Unveil Mobile Handsets Recharged with Sunlight

A new era will be ushered in to enable sunlight to recharge mobile handset batteries.

At the upcoming communications convention ‘Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2009’ to be held on February 16-19 in Spain, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will unveil its new mobile handset lineup equipped with batteries that can be recharged using solar energy, according to the industry on Friday.

The two products have solar panels built in to the backside battery cover and thus recharge the battery once it is exposed to sunlight.

Battery capacity after recharging for 10 minutes amounts to approximately three minutes in voice calls

As for the solar energy phone ‘Blue Earth’ put out by Samsung Electronics, the materials and manufacturing process, UI (User interface) and packaging all maintained an eco-friendly concept.

The case will be made from post consumer material (PCM) that recycles plastic water bottles, while hazardous materials such as brominated flame retardants, beryllium and phthalate that are harmful to the body and environment will not be used.

LG Electronics has not yet disclosed the product name of its ‘eco handset’ but plans to commercialize it sometime this year.

In a move to cut down on wasting resources and emitting volatile organic compounds (VOC), LG Electronics will apply a ‘green package’ to all handsets launched this year, removing the outer plastic coating layer to make it recyclable. In addition, it will make its user’s guide out of bean-oil ink and recycled paper.
