POSCO said yesterday the POSCO TJ Park Foundation has launched TJ Park Bessemer Science Scholarship to support Korean scientists majoring in basic sciences like physics, chemistry, bio engineering and mathematics.
The scholarship, named after British engineer and inventor Henry Bessemer, was pushed by the steelmaker`s founder Park Tae-joon, who also founded the Pohang University of Science and Technology, or POSTECH.
Park suggested the scholarship to assure local scientists that they could concentrate on their research and study within Korea at a time when the nation urgently needs to prevent a brain drain in the fields of science, company officials said.
The foundation will grant annual scholarships to 30 scientists - 10 students in doctoral programs, 10 students in postdoctoral programs and the other 10 scientists at the level of assistant professor.
Students in doctoral programs will receive 25 million won ($16,954) a year for three years, and the 10 postdoctoral students and assistant professors, 35 million won a year for two years.
The annual grants for 30 scientists will total 950 million won, POSCO said.
The foundation will select finalists in August after interviewing and assessing applicants in the first half, the company said.
