Fowls being used for rituals by the Nyshis of Arunachal Pradesh

Fowls being used for rituals by the Nyshis of Arunachal Pradesh during the Nyokom festival celebration at Dalang Basti in Sonitpur district of Assam in the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border about 200km away from Guwahati city, northeast India, 26 February 2009. Apart from Arunachal Pradesh state, a large concentration of Nyshi community is also living in Assam since long time. Nyokom festival is the main festival of the Nyshis tribe, which has a close link with cultivation. They celebrate this festival just before starting their agriculture season so that there may be more and more production of food grain in next harvesting season and to save their crops from flood, drought and insects. The word Nyokum has been derived from two words Nyok which means entire land mass of the earth, kum means putting things together or collectiveness. EPA/STR
