※Reading Comprehension
[4&5] Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Doctors frequently talk about working the physical body and keeping active. While physical exercise is vitally important, exercising the brain may be just
as significant. Research shows that brain-stimulating leisurely activities can reduce the risk of dementia, which is the loss of memory due to decreased brain cell activity. Such activities can also help maintain brain functions and abilities as people get older. In a recent study, researchers examined the leisure activities of a group of seniors over a 20-year period. The study looked at the activities the people engaged in and whether the people developed
dementia. The brain-challenging activities included doing crossword puzzles, playing board games or cards, playing musical instruments, reading and writing for fun. Also, researchers watched the effect on he brain of physical activities such as tennis, swimming, housework and dancing. The elderly who participated in playing board games or musical instruments, reading, writing
and dancing had reduced dementia incidents. Researchers say that those who engage in these activities are less likely to develop dementia. Participating
in one activity once a week can reduce the risk of dementia by 7 percent. For those who do the activities more frequently, risk reduction is 63 percent. Although members in the medical community are unsure as to why these activities help, one theory says that mentally challenging activities may help to
keep brain cells healthy and less prone to damage or disease.Another theory states that mentally stimulating activities may build up a sort of reserve within the brain so that there are more brain cells to replace those that are lost. The study did not show that any of these brain-stimulating activities were better than others. However, any activities that actively engage the brain are helpful to people of all ages. Doing a crossword today just may prevent dementia forty years in the future.
