Mobile-phone users can soon be free from the hassles of being enslaved by power sockets to recharge their cell-phone batteries.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expected to showcase solar-powered mobile phones at the Mobile World Congress 2009 scheduled to take place from Feb. 16 to 19 in Barcelona, Spain, industry sources said yesterday.
A solar-power-generating panel attached to the battery cover is capable of boosting the power every time the part is exposed to sunlight. A 10-minute recharge enables about a three-minute talk.
Industry sources said the packaging, all the parts and materials, as well as the whole production process of Samsung`s solar-energy powered cell-phone -- Blue Earth -- are environment-friendly.
LG Electronics has yet to disclose the name of its environment-friendly mobile phone, but it is expected to make a commercial launch within this year, industry insiders said.
In line with the growing demand for environment-savvy marketing, LG Electronics said it will do away with vinyl coating its mobile phones for the launching of all its products this year. The company has decided to adopt a "green package" policy to allow its mobile phones to be recyclable.
What is more, it will manufacture its product operation manual using oil-based ink and recycled paper.
Industry sources said LG also plans to develop environment-friendly mobile phones made of recyclable and biodegradable plastic, and power-efficient earth-friendly recharging devices.
