The Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a nationwide warning against hydrophobia, Friday.
``We received reports of 14 cases of rabies contracted last year and are expecting more this year. We suspect the widespread proliferation of wild raccoons are the main reason,'' the center spokesman Kwon Jun-wuk said.
Hydrophobia is mostly caused by a bite from an infected animal, but occasionally by other form of contact. It can cause acute inflammation of the brain and can be fatal if untreated.
The CDC advised people to avoid contact with strange animals. It also recommended people visiting Indonesia to take extra care and get vaccinated since six people have reportedly died there of the disease recently.
