머릿속에 티백을?

독일 국제 뉴로사이언스 협회에서 제공한 티벡모양의 작은 폴리프로필렌 조각의 사진이다. 2일 독일 하노버의 국제 뉴로사이언스 협회(INI)에서 있었던 프리젠테이션 도중에 공개된 이 사진속의 조각은 작은 티백의 형태로 그 내부는 500개의 알지네이트 캡슐로 채워져 있다. INI 신경외과의사들은 현재 줄기세포를 이용하여 중풍, 졸중 등의 뇌신경질환을 치료할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 기술을 개발중이다. 유전적으로 개량된 줄기세포들은 티백의 형태로 제작되어, 환자의 뇌속으로 투입한 뒤 뇌에 직접적으로 항염증성의 치료작용을 한다. 의사들의 표현을 빌리자면 세계 유일의 '머릿속의 약품공장'과 같은 이 신기술을 적용한 첫번째 환자는 발터 바스트씨이다.
