GERMANY STEM CELL THERAPY

INI neurosurgeons test new stem cell therapy for apoplexia patients

A handout photo made available by International Neuroscience Institut on 02 December 2008 shows a little 'tea-bag-style' bag made of polypropylene, which is filled with 500 alginate capsules during a presentation at the International Neuroscience Institut (INI) in Hanover, Germany, 02 December 2008. INI Neurosurgeons are currently developing a new kind of therapy involving stem cells to help cure the impacts of apoplectic strokes. Genetically modified stem cells fitted into a kind of 'tea bag' are implanted to the patient's brain where they are supposed to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Walter Bast was the first patient to be treated with the new therapy method, which - according to the doctors - was unique in the world and resembled a 'kind of medicine factory in the head'.
