Philippine Eagle 'Kalinawan' is seen inside a cage
Philippine Eagle 'Kalinawan' is seen inside a cage at the Center for Philippine Raptors at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, Laguna province, south of Manila, Philippines on 20 May 2009. The Philippine Eagle, the country's national bird, is an endemic critically endagered species believed to have only a few hundred species left in captivity and in the wild. Environment officials from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recently met to discuss plans of conservation for the rich biodiversity of each member nation. The Philippines is part of three 'mega-diversity' countries, which includes Malaysia and Indonesia. Despite occupying only 3 percent of the earth's surface, the ASEAN contains more than 40 percent of all species on earth. EPA/ALANAH M. TORRALBA
