(43) Dynamics of Life Path (2) - Stem Combination

By Janet Shin

Let's start this week's column by taking a closer look at the saju of Michelle Wie, a professional golfer who plays on the LPGA tour.

In 2006, Wie was named in a Time magazine article as one of the 100 people who shape our world. In October 2005, Wie announced she was turning professional at the age of 16, signing lucrative sponsorship contracts with Nike and Sony.

Usually, we see gap people as positive, active, future-oriented and extroverted. Especially when the gap day masters added by another gap in its saju, they are highly valued for its competitiveness. It is like a beautiful forest with lots of big trees. When gap people have gyeong metal (career star-ax) positioned well in other stems, they are very successful in their career path usually achieving a respected position.

We see gi stem in her year pillar, which has also a good relationship with gap wood, as it provides gap with ground to grow well and implies a good sign of money fortune at an early age. Also sa fire placed beneath the gi earth brought out her sunshine (talent) including gyeong metal inside. She has excellent talent and good career fortune as well.

By the way, although she gets money fortune in her early age, some hints are dropped by the fact that there is too much earth energy (money stars-father). Moreover, jin and sul earth are clashing each other. Gi earth is compatible with gap, as we learned last week. But in her saju, gi stem of her year pillar is combined with gap of month pillar instead of being combined with day master. We assume that her father's impact on her life might have been too much or there have been certain conflict that's not revealed itself.

In year 2007 (year of jeong hae), she could have difficulty in expressing her talent for the clashes between sa (fire-talent) and hae (water-knowledge, respect). She has made only one cut in the men's events and received criticism. In February 2007, it was reported that Wie hurt her left wrist and had to stop playing until the end of May. Explanation could be found in the interaction among the stem and branches and the relation with every coming years.

Celestial stems exist in the empty space and they change themselves as they meet the earth energy by sequence. For example, gap wood changes its power, property and utility as it meets the 12 different terrestrial branches. Gap energy with ja water is different from when it is with jin earth. When gap wood meets ja water, which means cold winter, it is like a naked and thin tree with barely any leaves, while the gap wood with jin earth beneath, is a healthy tree with lots of leaves and rooted in moist soil.

Having said that, each stem meets the energies of terrestrial branches by sequence and changes the property when they meet the fifth energy, jin earth. We may find many saju with different stem combinations, that give us clues about their lives.

When the ancient sages observed the nature and examined gap energy, they found that there always exists mu earth energy during the jin month of gap and gi year. It is not easy for us to find out.

There are traces of evidence when we look at the Chinese calendar (60 year cycle). In gap and gi years, the celestial stem is always mu earth for the jin months. It is because gap combines with gi to make mu earth.

Then what is the celestial stem for the jin month of eul and gyeong years? Eul combines with gyeong to make gyeong metal. So it is always gyeong-jin month.

Like this, you will be able to find the celestial stem for the jin month of other years too.

You may also notice the same theory from the books of ancient Chinese medicine. Saju, five elements, yin and yang theory and the study of ancient Chinese medicine go together.
