Life and Saju of the Late President Roh Moo-hyun

The late former President Roh Moo-hyun

By Janet Shin

We are in great grief at the sudden death of the former President Roh Moo-hyun last Saturday. Although some of us would have blamed him while others admired him, it was a shock and totally unexpected for everyone.

We praised him as the son of a poor farming family who was elected president. Born in 1946, he passed the Korean bar exam as a high school graduate since he was not able to study at law school due to poverty. We recognized him when he worked as a human rights lawyer and entered politics in order to serve justice.

We rebuked him when he was against the press and was less than diplomatic in dealing with political issues or foreign affairs such as echoing the wave of anti-American sentiment.

His presidency was controversial and filled with feuds with political opponents, and criticism about his abrupt political gambles. We were disappointed because he mishandled economic issues. He received condemnation for his and his family's bribery cases.

However, whatever criticism there is about his political and economic achievements or his personal life, no one doubts that he achieved success in his efforts to clean up the nation's political systems and to put an end to the connections between businesses and politicians. He never compromised himself with powerful government agencies, such as the prosecution and tax agencies in order to attain his integrity.

Challenge and victory, adversity and turbulence are words most frequently mentioned when we talk about Roh's life.

In the whirlpool of criticism, the 63-year-old ended his life by throwing himself off a 30-meter-cliff on a mountain in his hometown, leaving only a short suicide note.

We are supposed to study saju - four pillars of people's life in this column. Sometimes, we reviewed ordinary people's saju and sometimes celebrities' saju to understand the fate path and the cause-effect chain in life.

Today, we cannot help reviewing the saju of the late former president Roh here in this column. Before we start, I pay my deep respects to Roh and hope he finds peaceful repose. We pray for his happiness.

Here is his saju, being born in 1946 (year of dog), eighth month of lunar calendar.

What can you see from this saju? First of all, we can see that he was born with the energy of mountain, which is yang earth that balances other four elements, wood, fire, metal and water. Then, you will be able to see the severe clash between in wood (career star) and sin metal (expression star). His mountain has rocks, trees and sunshine, but there seems to be vicissitudes inside.

Although some accidents and incidents are unavoidable, we can say that the person with mu earth day master and with in-sin clashes in its branches, are appropriate for politicians, prosecutors, lawyers or judges because they have to handle various affairs in their career life. Otherwise, they would experience other disturbance in their personal lives.

This year (year of gi-chuk), there was a phenomenon between sul (friend star) and chuk of 2009. When we evaluate the status of a person's saju, we need to seek what element constitutes the saju. Usually we start from the month branch as the base environment of the person. We value whether the branches are penetrated toward the stem and the stems are rooted through the branches.

However in this saju, we cannot use any stem elements included in sin (month branch) because of the in-sin clash. In wood is injured by sin metal as ax chops the wood. Sin metal is damaged by in wood as in is a big tree for sin metal to chop. Then what we can select as a second choice to determine the status of this saju is fire element from sul, which is penetrated to byeong stem.

We can say that knowledge star tells best about this person. He pursues an honorable life. Whatever cost he has to pay, he would try to secure his honor in his life. In-sin clash tells the most part of his life, such as his career path and very pithy comments that might hurt his reputation

His suicide was not exclusively due to the corruption scandal but partly driven by the erosion of his political achievements as a whole and the indelible stain on his name.

We hoped that he would overcome this adversity since he had already been through a lot of challenges and victories in the past. However the challenge to his legacy of integrity was something he couldn't tolerate at all.

People will never forget his last words in the suicide note.

``The sufferings that will come are unfathomable. What is left for the rest of my life will be nothing but a burden to others. Don't be too sad, don't feel sorry, don't blame anyone. It's all fate. Life and death are both just a part of nature.''
