어떤 사람은 친환경적인 삶을 이유로, 어떤 사람은 경제적 어려움 때문에 텃밭을 가꾼다고 합니다.

Community gardens are sprouting all over the United States. Amateur gardeners like Sean Sullivan in Los Angeles are driven by an urge to green the planet. Others farm their own veggies to save money amid the recession, exercise, and eat fresh.

지역 공동체가 함께 가꾸는 텃밭이 미국 전역에서 생겨나고 있다. 텃밭을 가꾸기 시작한 지 얼마 되지 않은 로스앤젤레스 시민 션 설리번 씨는 환경 살리기가 시급하다고 판단해 이 일을 시작하게 됐다고 말했다. 불경기라 돈을 아끼기 위해 텃밭을 가꾸는 사람도 있고 어떤 사람은 운동을 위해, 또 다른 사람들은 신선한 채소를 먹기 위해서 텃밭을 가꾼다.

Sue Pringle is weeding her plot in west Philadelphia so she can grow lettuces and radishes. "I've just been taken off the waiting list and have been admitted to the Garden Court Community Garden. I've been on the waiting list for a year, and I feel lucky to be in," said Pringle.

수 프링글 씨는 필라델피아 서부의 작은 텃밭에서 잡초를 뽑고 있다. 그는 이곳에서 상추와 무를 키울 생각이다.

"1년 동안 대기자 명단에 올라 있다가 이제 겨우 '가든코트 지역공동체 텃밭(Garden Court Community Garden)'으로부터 텃밭 이용을 허락 받았다. 1년 간 기다렸는데 텃밭을 가꾸게 돼 기쁘다."

That plot was formerly one of 30,000 vacant lots in Philadelphia. The National Gardening Association predicts community gardens in the United States could mushroom five-fold to around five million over the next few years.

필라델피아에는 텃밭으로 사용할 수 있는 공터가 3만 곳 쯤 있다. 이 텃밭도 그 중 하나였다. 미원예연합(National Gardening Association)은 미국 내에서 지역 공동체가 함께 가꾸는 텃밭의 수가 앞으로 5년 안에 5배에서 최대 500만 개 까지 늘어날 것으로 내다본다.

Experts believe this trend is sustainable because of the aging baby boomer population, the earth movement, and the greening of once-empty lots. Eva Monheim is a horticulture lecturer at Temple University Ambler. "In most industrialized cities, you're going to see derelict buildings. They're coming down. They're using vacant lots for community gardens," said Monheim.

전문가들은 이런 움직임은 지속가능하다고 말한다. 베이비붐 세대가 나이를 먹어가고 있고 친환경 움직임과 빈 땅 활용하기 움직임이 일고 있기 때문이다. 에바 몬하임 씨는 템플 대학교 앰블러 캠퍼스에서 원예학 강의를 한다.

"산업화가 진행된 여러 도시에서 버려진 건물을 찾을 수 있다. 이런 건물이 철거되고 있는데 사람들이 건물 철거 뒤 생겨난 빈 땅에 텃밭을 가꾸고 있다"고 몬하임 씨가 말했다.

Her campus turned this unused plot into a community garden. Horticulture supervisor Grace Chapman says the response was overwhelming. "I just sent a quick email just to our campus, but I think people started forwarding them to the other people on the main campus, so I have 45 people who are looking for spots, and we only have around 30 that are available. One woman emailed me and said, 'I'm so glad you're doing this due to the economic problems our family is facing; we lost a couple of jobs, and I have extended family living with me, so we are counting on this to supplement our income and cut our grocery bills in half," said Chapman.

몬하임 씨가 일하는 템플 대학교는 쓰지 않는 빈 땅을 텃밭으로 바꿨다. 원예 관리인 그레이스 채프먼 씨는 반응이 폭발적이라고 전했다.

"앰블러 캠퍼스 학생과 교직원들에게만 짧은 이메일을 보냈는데 수신자들이 본교에 다니는 사람들에게도 퍼나르기를 시작한 것 같다. 빈 땅을 찾고 있는 사람은 45명인데 지금은 30명만 받을 수 있다. 한 여성은 메일을 보내 와 '텃밭 가꾸기를 추진해 줘서 기쁘게 생각한다. 우리 가족은 경제적으로 힘든 시기를 보내고 있다. 가족 중 몇 명이 실직했고 내가 부양해야 하는 가족들이 늘었다. 그래서 우리는 이 텃밭을 활용해 수입을 늘리고 장보기 비용을 좀 줄여보고 싶다'고 했다."

Back in balmy Los Angeles, Sean says it's not just the environment but the community environment that's satisfying."At community gardens, there's lots of people with lots of knowledge who I find to be very friendly and willing to share that information," said Sullivan.

기후가 온화한 로스앤젤레스로 돌아와 보자. 션 씨는 환경 문제만 해결되는 것이 아니라 공동체 분위기도 좋아진다고 설명했다.

"공동체 텃밭을 가꾸는 사람 중에는 텃밭 가꾸기에 대한 지식이 풍부하고 친절한 사람이 많다. 정보를 흔쾌히 함께 나눈다"고 설리반 씨가 말했다.
